CONCERTS
February Sky
Saturday, February 4th
8PM - $12
February Sky is traditional singer and Celtic guitarist Phil Cooper with songwriter and singer Susan Urban.
Phil sings and plays his own arrangements of traditional songs and tunes on six string guitar and cittern, and
he also interprets a number of carefully chosen songs from the best of modern Folk song writers, as well
as backing Susan up on her songs. Susan Urban is a writer of story songs and humorous "slice of life"
songs. She accompanies her songs, plus Phil’s songs and tunes, on six and 12-string guitar, six string
banjo, mountain dulcimer, and hand percussion instruments. Phil and Susan present a combination of old
and new songs addressing the widest possible range of experience, complete with vocal harmony, intricate
instrumentation and thoughtful stagecraft. They believe that Folk Music is a continuum - whether the
songs are self-penned or have a history thousands of years old, as long as they speak to the human
condition and the human heart, they carry on the Folk Music tradition.

Harvey Reid
Sunday, February 12
7PM -$15
Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Harvey Reid has honed his craft over the last 35 years in countless
clubs, festivals, streetcorners, cafes, schools and concert halls across the nation. He has been called a
"giant of the steel strings" and "one of the true treaures of American acoustic music." He has absorbed a
vast repertoire of American contemporary and roots music and woven it into his own colorful, personal and
distinctive style. His 22 recordings on Woodpecker Records showcase his mastery of many instruments
and styles of acoustic music, from hip folk to slashing slide guitar blues to bluegrass, old-time, Celtic,
ragtime, and even classical. Reid's skills and versatility on the guitar alone mark him as an important new
voice in acoustic music. He won the 1981 National Fingerpicking Guitar Competition and the 1982
International Autoharp competition. Yet he's also a veteran musician with a long list of studio and band
credits, a strong flatpicker who has won the Beanblossom bluegrass guitar contest, a versatile and engaging
singer, a powerful lyricist, prolific composer, arranger and songwriter, a solid mandolin and bouzouki
player, and a seasoned performer and captivating entertainer. And he plays the 6-string banjo and the
autoharp like you've never heard. Reid prides himself on his independence, and sees himself as a modern
embodiment of the ancient minstrels. You'll find elements of the traditional troubadour, the modern poet-
songwriter, the American back-porch picker, the classical virtuoso, and even a good bit of Will Rogers style
dry humor and satire. You'll hear folk, country, classical, blues, ragtime, rockabilly, Celtic, bluegrass, and
popular music influences. Although Reid has a vast repertoire of traditional and contemporary songs, his
concert material consists mostly of his own compositions and traditional music. Don't miss a chance to
hear the Master Minstrel in concert or to hear his amazing recordings. He how has two young children, and
is not traveling very much these days. website
Bill Staines
Friday , February 17
8PM – $12
Anyone not familiar with the music of Bill Staines is in for a special treat. For more than forty years, Bill has
traveled back and forth across North America, singing his songs and delighting audiences at festivals,
folksong societies, colleges, concerts, clubs, and coffeehouses. A New England native, Bill became
involved with the Boston-Cambridge folk scene in the early 1960's and for a time, emceed the Sunday
Hootenanny at the legendary Club 47 in Cambridge. Bill quickly became a popular performer in the Boston
area. From the time in 1971 when a reviewer from the Boston Phoenix stated that he was "simply Boston's
best performer", Bill has continually appeared on folk music radio listener polls as one of the top all time
favorite folk artists. Now, well into his fifth decade as a folk performer, he has gained an international
reputation as a gifted songwriter and performer. Singing mostly his own songs, he has become one of the
most popular and durable singers on the folk music scene today, performing nearly 200 concerts a year and
driving over 65,000 miles annually. He weaves a blend of gentle wit and humor into his performances and
one reviewer wrote, "He has a sense of timing to match the best standup comic."Bill's music is a slice of
Americana, reflecting with the same ease his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the
adventurers of the Yukon, the on-the-road truckers, or the everyday workers that make up this land. Many
of Bill's songs have appeared in grade school music books, church hymnals, and scouting campfire
songbooks; he is one of only a few songwriters to have eight songs published in the classic song collection,
Rise up Singing. Composer David Amram recently described Bill as "a modern day Stephen Foster…his
songs will be around 100 years from now." Over the decades, you have heard Bill singing on Garrison
Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion, HBO's award winning series Deadwood, and Public Radio's Mountain
Stage. Additionally, his music has been used in a number of films including Off and Running, with Cyndi
Lauper, and The Return of the Secaucus Seven, John Sayles' debut as a writer- director. "Folk music is
rich in the human spirit and experience. I've always wanted to bring something of value to people through
my songs." With these thoughts, Bill continues to drive the highways and back roads of the country year
after year, bringing his music to listeners, young and old. website
An evening of Chicago Blues w/
The Chicago Kingsnakes Duo
Saturday, February 25
8PM - $12
The Kingsnakes have been playing and touring for over 20 years. The musicians in the band come with a
laundry list of credentials, from touring across the world with Little Milton and Junior Wells to Byther
Smith and Jimmy Witherspoon. Their latest release, Blue Mosiac, is filled with twelve original tracks in their
most comfortable setting; Chicago blues. The band is tight, with a top notch rhythm section and Nelson
Keaton playing blues harmonica that dances in between the original lyrics sung by James “Ang” Anderson.
Overall, the songs are original and the music is easy to listen to. Fans of Chicago blues will enjoy the album
and it’s numerous references that will be instantly recognized by Chicagoans. It is, however, simply good,
easy to digest music. There are mixed influences in the album, from soul to R&B, but on Blue Mosiac, the
Kingsnakes are largely doing what they’ve done best for over two decades. When Front Porch Music
owner heard them live on Valpo's WVLP. "I just had to book them." website
